Notes for National Youth Conference

National Youth Conference is coming up fast and the excitement is growing! While many of us as adults will not be attending this event, there are several ways we can participate from afar.

·        Pray for and commission youth and advisors attending NYC!
Remember that June 20 is the Sunday set aside for congregations to pray for and commission their NYC participants. Resources will be posted by June 7 at www.brethren.org/nycresources .

·        Worship with NYC!
The worship service on Monday morning, July 19, will be live broadcasted via the internet. This worship service will feature the winners of the youth speech contest and the music contest winner. More specific details on who to access the webcast will be coming soon.

Thanks for your support of the younger members of our faith family!

2010 NYC Theme

National Youth Conference (NYC) 2010 has a theme: “More Than Meets the Eye,” drawn from 2 Cor. 4:6-10 and 16-18 (The Message).    The theme and some other aspects of the conference were decided as the National Youth Cabinet met Jan. 2-5 in Elgin, Ill. In a statement on the theme, NYC co-coordinators Audrey Hollenberg, Emily LaPrade, and Matt Witkovsky said the scripture passage “reminds us that God does great things through each person. . . . Even though we may seem like simple jars of clay, with God’s light we are more than meets the eye.”

The cabinet also discussed worship speakers and music leaders, which will be finalized in the coming months, along with broader goals, the schedule, and promotion ideas. Details will be posted as they become available at the new NYC website: www.2010nyc.org. NYC 2010, for senior high youth and advisors, will take place July 17-22, 2010, at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo.

Members of the cabinet, which will next meet in mid-August in Colorado, are Sam Cupp, Jamie Frye, Tyler Goss, Kay Guyer, Kelsey Murray, and Ryan Roebuck, along with adult advisors Christy Waltersdorff and Walt Wiltschek, Church of the Brethren Youth/Young Adult Ministry director Chris Douglas, and the NYC co-coordinators.

Youth Minister Challenge Fund Strongly Received

Praise to the Lord for God is good!  Thanks to all of you from the Western Plains District for helping us reach and go over our goal ($31,500) that the Nurture Commission set for our Youth Minister Challenge Fund..  The pledges and monies from your generous commitments give us a total of $31,590, and this was met by December 31, 2009.  These monies will be added to the invested fund account from which the District funds its youth program as these funds are received over the next three years. They will provide a good foundation for our work with District youth for years to come.

When the Nurture Commission met the other evening we asked ourselves if we set our goal too low since many that planned to contribute have not responded as yet!  We feel we were led to set the goal we did and if the Lord needs more for us to carry out the work that God has in mind then God will lead the way for more contributions to come in.  The encouragement from all of you has led us to look at our youth program and how it has grown in the last few years and to ask if there is more we should be doing.

After consulting with our Youth Minister, Jen Jensen, we feel now is the time to divide our youth into two groups and bring on someone to help Jennifer with the Junior High group. We feel our actions will help the youth program be even stronger. We will be keeping you posted after we take our proposal to the District Board in February.
