Pastors Encouraged to Attend Camp

The Outdoor Ministries Commission would like to extend an invitation to churches to support their pastors in attending a week-long Brethren camp at Camp Mt. Hermon or Camp Colorado as part of their pastoral work.  The importance of a pastoral presence at camp is so great that pastors should not have to take a week of their own vacation time to extend their services to youth.  The week can be spent mentoring youth, doing Bible Studies, assisting in camp fires and, simply, by being a pastoral presence.

In the past few years, it has become more apparent that the need for pastoral guidance has increased.  Especially for Junior High and Senior High age groups, the Outdoor Ministries Commission feels like this is vital as youth have tough questions and may bring issues from home that necessitates pastoral guidance.  Some camp leaders or counselors may not have the background or feel comfortable in dealing with certain issues that campers may have.  Counselors should not feel like they must attend to a camper’s problem if they are uneasy about it, which demonstrates why it is important to have a pastor present that they can refer the camper to.

The mission statement of the Outdoor Ministries Commission states that one of our goals is to ”provide ample opportunity through our camping program and facilities in Christian Education and Spiritual Renewal for Brethren youth, adults, families, churches, prospective members, including the unchurched, to grow in the faith of Jesus Christ.”  To ensure adequate ability for both churched and unchurched youth to grow in their faith, they must have the appropriate persons to confide in when the need arises

The hope for our Brethren camps is that we are nurturing youth that will, as adults, become vital members of our church and district.  The Outdoor Ministries Commission is of the opinion that part of this nurture must come from having a pastor available to them at all times during their camping experience.  To all churches in our Western Plains District, please allow and encourage your pastors this crucial ministry experience.  Our youth of the district deserve no less as they form their faith and face many issues of today’s world.
